Budgewoi Local History
Budgewoi is a small town located on the beautiful Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The town has a rich history that dates back to the aboriginal times.
Aboriginal History
The area surrounding Budgewoi was inhabited by the Darkinjung aboriginal people for thousands of years before the arrival of the Europeans. The Darkinjung people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and used the land and waterways for food and resources. Their spiritual beliefs were closely tied to the land and the environment.
European Settlement
The first Europeans to explore the area were explorers Matthew Flinders and George Bass in 1796. However, it wasn't until the mid-1800s that European settlers began to arrive in the area. One of the first settlers was John Tucker who established a cattle station on what is now known as Tuggerah Lake.
In the late 1800s, the area saw a boom in timber industry with the opening of the Norah Head Lighthouse and the construction of the Tuggerah Lakes Canal, which allowed timber to be transported to Sydney.
Growth and Development
The 1900s saw a shift from agriculture and timber to tourism as the main industry. Budgewoi and the surrounding areas became popular holiday destinations due to their natural beauty and coastal location.
In 1926, the Budgewoi Progress Association was established to promote and develop the town. The association worked to improve the town's infrastructure, such as roads and water supply, and to attract more visitors to the area.
In the 1950s and 60s, the town's population grew rapidly with the development of new residential subdivisions and housing estates. Today, Budgewoi is a thriving community with a population of over 3,000 people.
